There is a distance between being loved
and being known.
We spend much of our lives
trying to close it.
If I love you enough,
shouldn’t I understand?
But there are roads within another person
I have never walked.
Perhaps love does not ask me to.
Perhaps the Gap is not something
love must close.
It is the sacred distance
between your experience
and mine.
I can stand at its edge
without claiming to know
what it is to be you.
I can listen.
I can remain.
I can say,
I hear you.
Love does not close the Gap.
Presence honors it.
And perhaps the mystery
of another human being
is not something
to understand completely,
but something
worthy of reverence.
